  • Decide on your bottom line price. This would be your lowest price you would be willing to take.

The Royal Victoria Hotel sits at the head of Llanberis Pass, near the foot of Mount Snowdon. Its elevated position provides wonderful views over Llanberis village, reminiscent of a wise old headmaster appraising his class.

Sandwiched between the two lakes of Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris, the hotel is an excellent base for exploring the wild terrain of Snowdonia.

I awoke to another gloomy day. The rain had continued through the night and showed little sign of letting up. Apparently Llanberis gets twice as much annual rainfall as Caernarfon ten miles to the west and I could certainly believe it.

Breakfast was a pleasant affair. Staff dressed all in black were only too happy to serve your every whim. For the early risers, there’s the luxury of a table in the conservatory and great views across the village and lake. Unfortunately my aching limbs would not allow the advantage of an early start and I took my place with the commoners in the breakfast room.

The staff all seemed to have strange accents, my best guess that of eastern European. This seems to be the norm these days. Everywhere I’ve travelled in Britain recently has been staffed with foreigners.

There appears to be some kind of European swap shop going on. Somewhere in the far flung corner of the continent must reside a glut of English people serving tea and coffee, and asking people what they thought of the weather.

I decided to take a walk in the village. Despite a population of just 2,000, Llanberis provides jobs for over 1,200 people, mainly through tourism. Its most famous attraction is the Snowdon Mountain Railway, Britain’s only rack and pinion railroad. Believe it or not it opened the same day as the modern Olympic Games at Athens in 1896.

Unfortunately the opening day was not without its casualties when one of the carriages derailed and tumbled down Llanberis Pass. Amazingly there have been no more derailments to this day, a comforting thought as I made my way to the ticket booth.

Alas, the train today would only be going three-quarters of the way up due to ice on the track at the top. Having driven all the way to Llanberis the least I can do is wait for the ice to clear and travel to the summit.

So I decide to wait another day. Hopefully the rain may also have cleared by then. It’s only later I realise, not only is it the wrong day, but the wrong season and the snow will not clear until the summer. For now, however, it’s time for lunch.

    Technology + More29 Jun 2008 12:42 am

Notebook computer shipments are approximately estimated to be in the region of 127M units this year, which is huge! In fact demand is so big that taiwanese manufactures are anticipating component shortages before hand. Laptop Computers have been a developing market year on year for a number of years now and it looks like that will continue. Also with notebook computers now it seems like every 6 months or so the technology is already replaced with something new.

Increasing numbers of consumers are purchasing laptops for gaming these days. You can actually get a very high spec for your money these days because even the high end technology is slipping into the mass market area very quickly. I feel laptops are a sound option for gaming. Maybe not exactly for the extreme but they’re excellent for the majority of us. Nowadays the vast amount of gaming laptops are not even large, chunky and noisy. Gaming speed between laptops and desktop PC’s should forever be partial to desktops though, simply because desktops are always going to be bigger and more faster. Gaming laptops are the test of speed for the notebook computer industry and it will be interesting to see how the future technology ranks.

Numerous small system builders offer custom built laptops to niche segments. With custom built laptops you commonly get to find what make of parts is going into the system. By being able to remove some extras from the spec you can really save money on components you don’t intend to use. The computers found in shops are normally configured based average, mass market consumers and well not everybody is average now are they? Custom built laptops exist for this reason. They give requirements that others can’t. The positive thing is that there are a lot of companies who offer custum laptops and they provide outstanding customer care too. Yet a further great point.

I feel anumber of people are awiting the next line of laptops. Minute internet laptops are the latest idea to get mass market popularity. Clearly this will be something huge in developing markets. If a company produces a notebook that has a large screen but is also lightweight at a competitive market price I feel it would be a enormous success. If you utilise less potent parts then I guess this is very doable even now. Laptops for gaming enthusiats will get smaller, that’s for sure. Us enthusiasts will see something amazing in the coming months that’s for sure.

I’d recommend gaming laptop at rizeon.

Everyone wants to succeed in life. Most people want to succeed in business. And no one starts a business of any sort wanting to fail.

Yet the sad fact is that 80% of businesses will fail in the first 3 years of operation.

So what can you do to ensure your success?

Luckily these five simple (never confuse simple with easy), tried and tested steps dramatically increase your chances.

    1. Vision

It might seem like management techno-speak or newage psycho-babble but all the evidence is that developing and articulating a vision for your business and life is a major key to success.

Take time out. Really think about what you want from your business and life.

    Write it down.

A vision statement should not be long - it doesn’t even have to be in words. If you think graphically then capturing your vision in a picture or diagram could be just what you need. You are striving for a short, to the point description of where you want to be in 1, 2 and 5 years time.

In addition to your financial vision you need to ask yourself some questions:

What will our major products and services be?
What will be our target market?
Will we be market leaders, followers or niche players?
What will our unique competitive position be?
How will we ‘know’ our ideal customer?
How will we be perceived by our customers?
How will we promote your services to our customers?
    An old Japanese Proverb says,

“If you aim at a tree and fall short, you may only hit the ground.

If you aim at the sky you may hit a tree.”

Make sure you don’t set your targets too low.

Just before leaving the subject of ‘Vision’ - the number one key to achieving your vision is to communicate it widely. Make sure you tell your family and friends. Make it a central pillar in corporate literature. Include it in job descriptions.

The more you communicate your vision the more you demonstrate your commitment and the more likely you are to succeed.

    2. Set Out Your Goals

Success means something different to us all. A self-made businessman worth millions of dollars would be thought
successful by most. But if that businessman only rarely sees his family, never gets to play golf and spends all of his time on airplanes or in some exotic sounding (but usually antiseptic) hotel, is that really a success? Would that businessman think his life a success?

    Possibly, possibly not.

But if that man had set himself goals for his business, private and social lives he at least has some way of measuring his achievements.

Your vision is all about ‘what’ you are going to achieve. Goals are about the stepping stones to achieving that vision.

Before starting on any endeavour - set your goals.

Make sure your goals are specific enough that you know when you have achieved them. “I want to make lots of money” is weak. “I am going to make $100,000 next year and $200,000 the year after” is much stronger.

The more specific and well articulated your goals the greater your chance of achieving them.

Don’t forget to include your private and social goals. Many rich people complain that they have all the freedom that money can buy - but money can’t buy the time to enjoy what they have earned.

An old boss of mine from my days in corporate consultancy once observed, “You can’t buy back the years of your children’s lives”. He’s right.

Make sure you know what real success would mean to you.

    3. Plan, Plan, Plan

If the number one key to success in retailing is location, location and location, the number one key to success in business
    is plan, plan, plan.

Remember the 5 Ps success model - Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance. (When I was taught this in the military there was a 6th P - for the sake of a mixed audience I have left this out. Use your imagination - you’ll guess what it was :-))

If you’ve done your goal setting you know what you are going to achieve. The point of planning is how you are going to do it. Break each goal down into constituent steps needed for its achievement. For each step decide what, who, where and when it is to be done.

Be realistic and make sure that every step is achievable in the time set. Be prepared - when you plan-out all that you need to do, the amount of work can be daunting. Better to know this up-front than sale merrily into a venture only to find it is a huge monster that is going to take you a lifetime to kill.

    4. Action Counts

I’ve seen some beautiful plans. Highly researched, well thought out and presented. I’ll talk to a business owner and they’ll say, “We’ve got a plan” and pull it out of the bottom draw of a filing cabinet somewhere.

“So, why aren’t you using it”, I’ll ask. Nine times out of 10 the plan was produced to obtain
funding. Lot’s of really good work is done but once the money is obtained the plan is put to one side and ignored.

Big mistake. Taking action is the only thing that counts.

Every successfull business I have looked at has clear, current business, operational and marketing plans. It doesn’t matter whether your business is offline or online. It’s taking action that delivers the results.

    5. Another 5 ‘P’s to Success

Passion - You have to believe in what you are doing. No where is this more obvious than on the internet. You can spot the ‘me-too’ advertisers in a second. The people who succeed are the ones in have passion, who truly believe in what they are doing. Do something that you love.

Push - No matter how good your plan you have to provide a big push to get it moving. Your plan inevitably involves change. Achieving change takes effort. Think of it as if you were trying to move a boulder. To get that boulder up and moving takes a lot of muscle and effort. Once it is moving though it becomes much easier.

Persistence - Getting started is relatively easy. Afterall, you are all fired up with energy and enthusiasm at that time. Few things worth achieving happen over night. Instead, there will be problems, hold-ups and frustrations. Don’t allow yourself to become disillusioned or demotivated. You need persistence.

Patience - Results don’t happen instantly. Allied to persistence you will need some patience.

Profit - OK, OK it’s trite. But follow the steps here, gear yourself to provide these 5 Ps and you will succeed. In
business, profit is a measure of your success.

No one can guarantee your success whether in life or in business. But you can dramatically increase your chances of success through these five simple, very well established principles.

    The question is, “WILL YOU”?

For most folks, owning your own business is a dream come true. The freedom of being your own boss and succeeding to the best of your ability are facts of life for the small business owner. Sure, there’s more stress than what you probably imagined when you were creating your grand plans, but with a little strategy and planning you can overcome any tough spot you get in. There are 7 tactics developed by successful marketers that are sure to make your business as successful as theirs.

    1. Create A One of a Kind Selling Point
If you want to stand out from the crowd, create a unique selling proposition that stresses the benefits the customers will receive from doing business with you. Will they get faster service? Go ahead and dramatize it, but keep the customer at the focus…”Get free overnight delivery!” Hey, it tells the customer…you get quick service and a discount on shipping. Two definite benefits in one statement.

Why should someone buy from you and not your competitor? I hate to deal a blow to your ego, but it really has nothing to do with you , your product, or your service. Yeah, its a little self-centered, but customers are attracted by offers that point out the things that benefit THEM.

Don’t go out on a limb to create new products and services to get attention. Just, add a special benefit to the ones you already have… maybe it’s quicker service. The most effective things to emphasize are benefits that your competition cannot or is not willing to give.

    2. Use Testimonials
Hey, we all know that business owners think their product or services are the best thing going, but it’s what the current customers think about it that really matters to your prospective customers. They’re the ones who see things from their point of view… what they have to say about the business has an impact.

Testimonials play an important part in advertising - especially for small businesses. Yeah, big businesses with well-known names don’t have to worry about it, but small companies can use testimonials as marketing tools to build credibility.

Think about it…how else can we gain credibility than by creating a group of satisfied customers and shouting what they have to say? Let’s look at some ways we can make testimonials an effective part of our marketing campaigns.

    3. Upsell
Upselling is one of the most successful marketing trends today. Everywhere you go, someone is trying to get you to buy more. From McDonalds with its supersize options to clothing stores that try to sell you shoes to match your outfit, everyone’s jumping on the band wagon. Why? It works!

Your customers already know that you have great products and provide satisfactory service. They trust you to come through for them. Think about it… it’s much easier to make sales to someone you already have a relationship with.

Use every opportunity to increase your sales volume within the customer audience you already have. Do you have a product that goes with the one they are purchasing? Offer it to them at the register. It’s a proven and effective method for increasing sales. You may be shocked at the additional sales you can generate from those who are already buying from you.

    4. Make Your Price Seem Smaller
Divide and conquer… The old war tactic works in marketing too! When the price seems too steep, break it down into “buyable” size bites. An $120 item is only 12 low monthly payments of $10. A $365 purchase would only cost $1 per day. Now that sounds affordable!

    5. Paint The Benefits Pretty
Customers buy because they want to enjoy the benefits of the purchase. A lady might buy a dress because she wants to feel sexy, or a man will buy a book because he finds pleasure in reading. Emotions are the key element that drives purchases.

Use word pictures to stir up the emotions that will instigate the sale. Let them “feel” the benefits, and they’ll be more apt to head for the cash register. Put them where you want them.

    6. Create Attention Getting Headlines
Are you ready to capture your reader’s attention with great copy? The headline is the place to start. How often do you scan the newspaper’s headlines before you decide whether or not to read the article? Yeah, that’s where we lose or gain the reader’s interest, so it’s a pretty important part of the advertisement.

A good headline should telegraph its message in twelve words or less. Double check those headlines. Do they make a promise of a positive benefit, or ask a provocative question? Don’t settle for less than attention grabbing statements.

    7. Provide An Offer They Can’t Resist
Is your deal too good to pass up? If not, you need to improve it. Hey, I’m not talking about cutting prices even more…you’ve still got to make a profit. You can make the deal sweeter just by increasing the readers knowledge of the value of the product, or adding bonuses that are perceived as valuable, but cost you little.

Motivate buyers with expirations. Yeah, an open ended offer encourages procrastination…which leads …yep, nowhere. When the customer knows he has until Saturday to purchase an item he’ll pay more for on Sunday, he’ll make it a priority to head for your shop.

The Rainbow vacuum cleaner was invented to meet a growing need felt by women around the time of the depression. What was that need? It was simply the need for the American housewife to have a clean house. They wanted a clean house without using the old bag vacuums that were available at that particular time. They knew that bag vacuums would blow dust right back into the air because all vacuum cleaner bags have tiny holes in them.

The unique quality of the Rainbow is that it uses water to catch the dirt instead of a bag. The first Rainbow vacuum was much smaller than the current models you see these days. It was what I would call “dinky”. The models that you have seen in the last few years are all made out of plastic. The kind of high impact plastic that they make football helmets with. However, the first Rainbow vacuum cleaner was made out of light weight pot metal and was very easy to move around the house. The current models have a two quart water basin to hold the water, the first Rainbows didn’t hold near as much water. I believe it was closer to one quart.

The Rainbow vacuum has evolved greatly over the years but the concept hasn’t changed at all. Rexair’s motto is still “Wet Dust Doesn’t Fly”.
