With each project we have a desired end point, a definition of success. We spend time, and energy, creating solutions and plans to solve a problem or get to a desired end point; however we may not go ahead with plans because they are not simply financially viable or just too expensive.

Cost Benefit Analysis is a simple and widely used technique for deciding whether to make a change or to go ahead with a project.

As the name suggests, simply add up the value of the benefits of a course of action, and subtract all the costs associated with it. This calculation may be dollar focussed or undertaken on a more qualitative variation.

Costs are either one-off, i.e. a single expense, or may be incurred over a period of time eg weekly monthly etc. or perhaps could be a combination of both.

The Benefits of a course of action are most often received over a period of time.

We build this effect of time into our analysis by calculating a pay-back period. This is the time it takes for the benefits of a project to repay, to the investor or business, the full cost of implementing the project.

In business, companies usually look for pay-back over a specified period of time - e.g. three years being quite normal. This payback period is usually calculated using complicated mathematical and financial formulae, using interest rates and CPI etc and is often described as a percentage return on investment per year.

Simplistically for our purposes let’s say it takes 3 years to pay back the cost of implementation of a project, at zero interest rate, and CPI is also zero. (What a stagnant world that would be) The percentage return per year is therefore 100 divided by 3years equalling 33.33%.

Some businesses have a project hurdle rate of 30%. That means they will not invest in the project unless it returns a better rate then 30%. I.e. The project must pay for itself in less than 3 years.

In its simple form, cost/benefit analysis is carried out using only financial costs and financial benefits.

For example, a simple cost/benefit analysis of a new shopping centre would measure the cost of building the centre, and subtract this from the economic benefit to the developer of increased rental income. It would not measure either the cost of any environmental damage or the benefit to local consumers of convenient and easier travel to the shops.

A more sophisticated approach to cost/benefit analysis is to try to put a financial value on these intangible costs and benefits. This can be highly subjective.

For example; Is an historic building is worth only its material cost if it is in disrepair? Is it worth the value of the land it is sitting on? Or is it worth millions due to the history located with the building, who lived there, what decisions were made, and who was born/died there?

Alternatively what is the $ value of putting fresh plants in an air-conditioned office?

These are questions that managers and business/political leaders have to answer, and be able to justify their answers to others.

The version of cost/benefit analysis we covered here is simple. As noted though, where large sums of money are involved, eg mining projects, oil refineries, and large property developments etc project evaluation is a specialisation on its own.

Too much goal setting and strategic planning can leave you
feeling like you’re working against the forces of nature;
too little and you end up where you never intended to
be-with a life or business that is bigger, smaller, or
different than what you genuinely desire. Though getting you
and your organization where you most want them to be at any
given time can be hard work it can also be exhilarating. Is
there a better way? Is it possible to minimize the stress
and maximize the exhilaration while still accomplishing
those things that are most important to you?

Absolutely-it simply requires a shift in consciousness. The “win at all costs” mentality (win-lose) continues to give way to the “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine” mentality (win-win). And this is evolving further. Today we can
position ourselves for success, contribute to the success of
others, and be responsive to the needs of our changing world
(win-win-win).

If your first thoughts echo the sentiment “the world is
going to hell in a hand basket,” please note that we needn’t
go with it, nor must we turn back time. Instead, we must
take responsibility for our thoughts, feelings and
actions-in life and business. What we do affects not only
the quality of our lives, but others’ lives as well. We have
an unprecedented opportunity in today’s world to create
meaningful lives, powerful and productive organizations, and
contribute to a greater good for our global community. The
change begins with each one of us.

IDENTIFY YOUR HIGHEST VISION:

“What is your greatest intention for your life and business?” Knowing the purpose for your existence is important. The quality of the goods we create, the services we extend, and the relationships we build are central to all that we are and all that we do. “If you don’t know where you’re going you might end up somewhere else” is a light-hearted statement that conveys very real wisdom. Yet when people are asked what they most want to accomplish in their lives they all too frequently respond
with, “I just want to be successful.”

This response is way too vague to be helpful. Genuine
success must be personally defined and be inclusive of all
aspects of who you are, what you do, and what you want to
accomplish. That said, we also know that it is our financial
integrity that sustains our ability to contribute in
productive and meaningful ways, live in accordance with our
greatest desires, and call forth the gifts and talents of
others. Our personal and professional lives are inextricably
interwoven and it is imperative that we stay attentive to
multiple bottom-lines.

KNOW WHAT’S IN YOUR “POSSIBILITY FUNNEL”:

“What specific things do you want to direct your attention
and efforts toward?” Fulfilling our greatest intentions is a
multi-faceted endeavor. It is essential that we not make
decisions prematurely, nor let the “tyranny of the possible”
stop us from moving forward. Decisions must be made within
the context of all of the things that are most important to
each individual or entity. Life and business need not be
lead in a linear fashion-it’s not in our best interest to
move from point A to point B with blinders on.

All of our values, the possibilities that intrigue us, and
the goals we are striving toward must be within the scope of
our vision at all times. Many who have locked into a single
goal to the exclusion of all others will tell you how
quickly life can get out of balance. A singular focus can
cost people their health, loss of significant relationships
(both personal and professional), and access to other
opportunities that might have served them better.

DECIDE ON THE ONE NEXT STEP:

“What is the ONE next step you can take to move yourself
toward your goals?” Every intentional step a person takes
offers them new opportunities and insights that will serve
as guides for the next step they will want or need to take.
It’s not necessary to know exactly how things will happen or
have everything you anticipate needing before you begin. We
can’t start an ascent at the top of a mountain, and if we
continually focus on all that the trip will entail we can
become so daunted that we never begin at all.

Once we have the “big picture” and have grasped the
magnitude of our potential journey, we must focus our
attention on taking each individual step. Though you can
anticipate some of what you’ll encounter and can stand ready
to respond to changing circumstances, count on life and
business to be full of surprises. Trust that you’ll know
what you need to know when you need to know it and that you
can acquire the learning or resources as the need for them
arises.

HOLD YOUR GOALS LIGHTLY:

“Do your goals continue to be what you most want to work
toward?” Choosing what’s most appropriate for us at any
given time allows us to make new decisions the minute a
given goal or action stops being right. It doesn’t matter
how much we’ve invested personally or financially, if a goal
is no longer suitable we are better served to release it and
move on. Imagine relaxing into the flow of your life, or
being able to support your organization’s ability to be both
goal-oriented and responsive to changing circumstances. Nice
thought, huh?

Knowing what you want and why you want it is essential, but
staying open to other possibilities is both wise and
prudent. Sometimes obstacles are put in our paths to direct
us elsewhere, other times to test our resolve and
commitment. At the very least obstacles invite us to
reassess the “rightness of our direction,” and to relinquish
our hold on a goal when it serves us well to do so.

UTILIZE EACH NEW VANTAGE POINT:

“Where do you want to go from here?” As you achieve goals or decide they’re no longer right for you, new decisions must be made and new directions determined. By continually scanning our changing horizon we create a fluid and self-correcting way to
continually experience success. When you consistently
reevaluate the “rightness of your direction,” you can
identify new opportunities and possibilities in the same
moment that you are achieving or releasing another goal. Has
someone new been drawn to you who can further your efforts?
Is there a new use for your efforts? Has something changed,
internally or externally, that leads you to feel differently
about your goals? Do you want or need to alter course?

Change is the only constant in life and business, it is
important to stay open to unintended outcomes and unforeseen
possibilities. When we relinquish our need to exert our will
over everyone and everything (power over) we can relax into
new opportunities for our lives and businesses (power to).

CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES AND CONTINUE ON:

“What have you accomplished and what new sense of purpose
has arisen?” Powerful and productive decisions in life and
business reflect people’s highest visions-and highest
visions grow with each step taken. Life and business aren’t
intended to be a series of starts and stops, at their best
they are a constant evolution toward excellence. When
someone says, “you’re getting there,” the smart mouth says
“there where?” Each of our goals is merely a mile marker and
as it is accomplished or discarded it is replaced by yet
another. Life satisfaction increases and the culture of an
organization is enhanced tremendously, however, when we take
time to acknowledge every step taken as a genuine
accomplishment.

Once the celebration is over, our sense of purpose calls for
meaningful action to continue.

Success is both a destination and a journey, travel lightly and savor each moment!

In my experiences, most independent musicians do very little,
if anything, in the interest of generating advance exposure for
their upcoming new music releases. This is, most likely, due to not having a strong enough budget in most cases.

When I was writing my first music handbook fifteen years ago,
I contacted a Phoenix radio music director for one of my book’s
interviews and asked how important advance promotion was
for new music releases.

She stated that advance and pre-promotion was responsible
for as much as 80% of the success and longevity of both
exposure and sales for music, regardless of genre or whether
the product was a major label or independent release.

That makes a lot of sense, because as much “noise” and
interest that you can generate and get going *before* the
actual release date, the more interest and awareness you can
sustain for it during its actual release phase.

This includes advance radio airplay, advance on-air interviews,
advance press coverage, sampler giveaways, and anything else
that you would do to promote and publicize your music…only
doing it in a PRE-phase.

“Yeah, Kenny, that’s cool, but what about artists who already
have a release out and are way past the pre-promotion phase?”

I’m always glad when you ask me those types of questions, as
they really keep me on my toes, figuratively and literally.

Well, if you are an artist who missed the proverbial pre-
promotion boat, but haven’t begun manufacturing your product,
I would suggest your having as many people listen to your
music on a CD-R, or even better and cheaper, emailing them
MP3 versions of your music in order to get their responses (and, positive ones, hopefully).

Concentrate on getting as many local, regional or national
radio music directors, program directors, television personnel,
or print media editors or writers to give you a simple reaction
to and endorsement for your music.

You are not requesting an interview, nor a music review, so
this ought to go rather quickly, particularly, if you contact
people online. If you focus on getting media people to give
you responses, you do not need to worry with getting their
permission to use their comments, as you would with private
citizens. Media personnel also, generally, present an air of
respect, authority and expertise regarding what they do.

What you want to do with any (positive) media responses is
include them (in small but readable) type as a part of your
credits file that you give to your manufacturer, placing them
(preferably) on the bottom of your front cover, or the back
cover of your CD case.

Allow enough space for 3-5 brief comments, preferably, in the
form of one-liners, such as:

“Hot to Trot is a slamming single.” - Joe Blow, New Times A-Comin’

“Hot to Trot burned my fingers!!” - Shelly Slacker, KTUF-FM

Also, be sure to cite the media source of each comment.

Of course, you say, these are normally included in the little
booklet within the case, don’t you?

Well, keep in mind that, while having comments on the little
booklet inside is good, it doesn’t serve our *current* purpose,
which is to generate and maintain potential music buyers’
interest after their having been caught off guard and attracted
to that great CD cover concept that you took advantage of
after reading my article on it.

Now, if you are too late for the manufacturing phase, although
it may tend to look slightly “tacky,” depending on how you
format it, take your comments and copy them on labels with
adhesive backs that you can cut out and glue somewhere on
your CD case.

Even better, consider using one of those little round, brightly
colored stickers so that it appears more “normal” and appears
as something that much of the general public is accustomed
to already.

Certain turns are for certain conditions. The long carved turns using up the whole of a wide smooth piste are for fast skiing, where braking is not a necessity. These turns are the basis for giant slalom and downhill technique.

On steep or busy slopes, however, or in the bumps, or while learning to ski in the powder, you will need to brake your speed more, so here is the basic short turn that will keep you going nicely on these surfaces in perfect control.

Go to a gentle blue piste to start with in order to concentrate on these exercises. Before you start to do anything imagine your upper body position as you drive a car. Your head is facing the front. Your arms are holding the steering wheel. They are held out, slightly bent at the elbow, in front of you. The rest of your upper body is held facing the front by the shape of the seat. This all pre-supposes that you are not trying to tune the radio or wind down the passenger window.

Stand on a flat bit of your chosen slope and assume the driving position. Face straight down the hill. Hold your arms out at chest height as though gripping the steering wheel of your sit-up-and-beg roadster. By now quite a few passers-by will have stopped to look at you.

The poles are held quite firmly, hanging down with the points just off the snow. This is the position in which your upper body must remain the whole time that you are moving and turning down the piste (not for ever but just for this exercise!). Your skis will be going from side to side underneath you like windscreen wipers.

Get going straight down a minimal slope jumping the skis from side to side across the fall line underneath you. This is where all that fitness training is going to come in useful.

You are travelling quite slowly, no more than five miles an hour, your body is facing the front, and your arms are held out as though gripping the steering wheel. You will find that the only way to get the skis round each time is to go down slowly, and then jump them up and across the fall line, ie a down slow and up quick unweighting. As you go down put the pole in firmly, jump up and around it, and immediately go down to put the other pole in for the next turn.

The object of this exercise is to get a rhythm going with one turn after another, and to give you a feeling of the skis going underneath you whilst your upper body stays rigidly facing the front. You will probably be wishing by now that you had never bought this book.

Have a rest after a few turns, and then try again. It will seem pretty rough to start with, especially trying to keep the skis parallel and bringing them round tidily, but worry not. While you are having a rest, try this sequence a few times standing still: down, right pole in, up … …….down, left pole in, up … and so on.

The next time you go increase the speed a bit, remembering that the faster you go the less effort is needed to unweight the skis. Continue to do one turn after the other with no lapse in between. Hum a catchy little tune to yourself and keep in time with its beat; you should be doing about one turn a second.

You can now read Part 2 of a ‘Basic Short Turn’.

Simon Dewhurst has taught downhill skiing in North America, Scandinavia and the European Alps for 35 years. He currently runs a ski chalet agency in the French Alps. His book “Secrets of Better Skiing” can be found at http://www.ski-jungle.com If you have any comments about the above article, he will be happy to answer them.

Are you looking to buy a HDTV? Take a look at our guide to find out what HDTV is about.

1. What does HDTV stand for?

High Definition Television

2. What is HTDV?

It is a new technology and way of filming that has a higher bit depth resolution and gives you a sense or realism while watching the program. Sports are one of the leading industries in high definition programming. To film in HDTV requires a special camera.

3. How can I tell if my TV is HDTV?

It should say it directly on the box or with the model number. EDTV is not HDTV! There is another side aspect most people overlook due to pricing schemes and that is pixel depth. The cheaper plasmas and LCD have lower clarity or pixels. Therefore, to buy a great HDTV, you need to look for higher pixel resolutions.

4. Why Should I Buy One?

Because you will never go back, it is like night and day. A true HDTV and HD Television Program are ten times better picture clarity than at the movie theaters. HDTV’s also have lots of additional features that standard old televisions do not. They usually have ports for connecting to computers to act as a computer monitor, split screen, more aspect ratios for watching in different formats. Since the cameras have have been improved to record HD programs, they also went ahead and improved the sound recording system and so you have even higher quality sound to go along with the improved picture.

HDTV has been out for a few years now and therefore there are less bugs and defunct screens. In addition, the price has drastically fallen, for around $2000 you can buy an excellent 32-42 screen with high resolution and all the extra options.

5. Is there anything else I should know when buying a HDTV screen?

Yes, the cables can be very expensive. HDMI cables, RGB, and others that maximize the picture and sound (which are necessary) can cost between $35-$50 each and you need several. It is not necessary to buy name brand cables, so go to places like radio shack and buy the off brand for half the price. In addition, please research whether you should buy an LCD or Plasma screen, because based on you use and room arrangements you will require one or the other.

Are you looking to buy a HDTV? Take a look at our guide to find out what HDTV is about at http://www.hdtv-info-center.com

When you think of treasure hunting, maybe gold coins and precious stones come to mind, but it doesn’t end there. You can start in your own attic to see what treasures you find. Then you can check out some of the more unusual ways to go treasure hunting.

Diamonds In Parking Lots

Temperature changes getting in and out of cars and buildings cause diamonds to come loose from their settings. Because of this, parking lots are one of the most common places diamondare lost. An older couple I read about became experts at telling the difference (from a distance!) between the sparkle of a diamond and bits of glass. Now they regularly take early morning walks in mall parking lots for a second income.

Desert Treasure Hunting

An old Native American we met at a hot spring in Arizona showed us how to find arrowheads and metates (used for grinding corn or mesquite beans) in the desert. They’re hundreds of years old. He sold one of his metates for $200 during a yard sale, but for non-Native Americans this may be illegal. Check with authorities on this one.

Treasure In Vacuum Cleaner Dust

In California a man took the shag carpet from an a old theater being remodeled, saving the owners the cost of disposal. During the thirties the theater was a place where the wealthy went. Like all of us, the wealthy lose things, but perhaps more valuable things.

When he cut up and carefully shook out the old carpet , he found over $2,000 worth of precious stones, rings, and coins. Then, wondering what’s caught by vaccuum cleaners, the man arranged to take the full cleaner bags from several cleaning companies each week. They save disposal costs, and he regularly finds coins and small jewelry when he digs through the dirt.

Natural Treasures

My wife and I have sold sea shells we collected from Florida beaches, giant pine cones from California, and rocks we collected all over the country. We sold them at flea markets and craft shows, as is, or made into something crafty. I once met a man who sold “burls” (unusual growths on trees) for as much as $200 each.

Treasure Hunting In The Garbage

Our city collects large junk for free during a week each spring. We see good bicycles, furniture, games, toys, chairs, and more, in front of almost every house. Several people come with trucks and trailers to pick out things to sell at flea markets or auctions. It’s a regular source of income for some of them. I’m sure this happens in other cities too.

Treasures In The River

Both kids and criminals throw things off of bridges routinely. It’s a quick way to get rid of evidence. As a child I saw bicycles in rivers several times. I read about a man that makes a living using magnets and other tools to retrieve guns, money, and other things of value from the bottom of murky rivers, near bridges.

These are just a few of the ways to go treasure hunting. Will you make much money? Maybe, but probably not. I can tell you though, that it is a thrill to hear the metal detector start beeping, even if I do only find a quarter in the sand.

Steve Gillman has been studying every aspect of money for thirty years. You can find more treasure hunting ideas, and more interesting and useful information on his website; http://www.UnusualWaysToMakeMoney.com

Multiply Your Sales Through Affiliate Programs By Pradeep Aggarwal

What could be better than exceeding your personal sales goals for a given month or year? How about doubling, tripling or even more of you sales goal for the month? This is exactly what affiliates can do for you. The amount of growth potential through affiliates is unlimited; the more affiliates you have the more money you can make, after all, if Sam Walton tried to run every Wal-Mart store, he obviously wouldn’t be very successful. You must realize that for maximum growth you cannot do it alone. Think of the success of companies such as Avon or Home Interiors. Their success is based on two things; a great product and excellent affiliate programs.

To attract affiliates to your company you should make it worth their time. Offering one percent of sales, is not an attractive offer, the higher the commission that you are able to offer your affiliates the more affiliates will be tempted to join your team. You should also provide your affiliates with the tools that they will need to successfully market your product such as banner ads, articles, and anything else that will help them to better market the product. You should provide the affiliates with updated product information through newsletters, new promotional campaigns and other things to motivate and inform the affiliates.

You can choose to run your affiliate program in a few different ways, both of which are beneficial to your business. A one-tier affiliate program allows you to generally offer a larger commission and pays on one level. The affiliate will receive a predetermined amount for each sale. Using a two-tier affiliate program, affiliates are paid on two different levels. This is done by allowing the affiliates to recruit others to sell under them. In this situation, the top level affiliate would receive a slightly larger commission than the recruit or second level affiliate. For example if the top level seller makes 20% of the sale, then she/he would make 15% giving the second level affiliate the 5%.

Setting up the affiliate program can also be done in two different ways. One way is to do it yourself through an affiliate tracking software. This software will provide you with a way to track affiliate sales as well as allow the affiliates to view their progress. The downside to this option is that you are responsible for making payments. You can also choose to hire an affiliate tracking company to do all the work for you. These companies will allow the use of credit cards and completely run the affiliate program from billing customers, paying affiliates, and also pay you. This is a great option for the busy business owner or the beginning business owner and it is affordable as most affiliate tracking companies charge a small one time fee. However you choose to run your affiliate program it is sure to increase profits for your business.
