When it comes to advertising, I’ve tried just about everything. I tried free classified ad sites, I tried FFA sites, I tried banner exchange programs.

The results? Not much.

I was tired of hearing that the Internet is the largest market in human history. Maybe so, but how could I reach those millions of people?

The answer, I discovered, is ezine advertising.

Ezines are sometimes called ‘opt-in’ lists because everyone who receives an ezine has chosen to do so.

And that’s why ezine advertising gets results. People read ezines and they’ll read your ad. And if you’ve matched the ezine to the product you’re selling, you’ve reached your target audience.

There are currently around 90,000 ezines being published every month. So whatever you’re selling, there’s more than likely an ezine that will take your ad straight to the audience you want to reach.

Ezine advertising is not only effective, it’s cheap as well. A 5 line ad in an ezine that goes to 3000 people will cost you between $5 and $20 per issue.

As a general rule, you’ll always get back at least the cost of the ad, and usually much more. So there’s very little risk.

But there are some tips for successful ezine advertising. Here they are:

1. The first and most important rule is: “Track your Ads!” Say you place an ad in 5 different ezines and get a hundred responses. If you don’t track your ads, you won’t know which ezines were pulling responses and which weren’t.

But how do you track your ads?

The simplest method is to place a key or a code at the end of your email address:

yourname@yourdomain.com?subject=ezineA

Then, when you get a reply with ‘ezineA’ in the subject field, you’ll know which ezine it came from.

For a URL, it’s the same principle:

http://www.yourdomain.com?ezineA

However, if you’re going to code your URLs, you’ll need a good webstats program to track the coded URLs. These two programs are excellent and they’re both free:

Here’s another way to code your URLs: for every ezine ad, create a duplicate of your homepage and name the page after the ezine that your ad will appear in. So, if the ad is appearing in EzineA, this is the URL you’d place in that ad:

http://www.yourdomain.com/EzineA

2. Target your audience. It may seem obvious but some advertisers overlook this. If you’re selling a web-marketing course, don’t advertise in an ezine that deals with stock options; they probably won’t be interested.

Use the ’subject categories’ in any ezine directory to find ezines that relate to the product you’re selling. You can find a list of 56 ezine directories in ‘The Free Directory of Ezines’ at:

3. Once you’ve chosen a number of ezines that target your audience, subscribe to them and examine the ads closely. If you see an ad that keeps repeating issue after issue, you can be pretty sure that it’s getting results. You’ve found a good ezine to advertise in.

4. Check to see how many ads are in the ezine. You probably won’t get much response from an ad in an ezine that has 15 or 20 ads per issue. Readers of those ezines have become hardened to the ads and have learnt to skip them.

5. Check to see if the ezine publisher has a policy of never running ads for two similar products in the same issue - your ad will be much more effective if it’s the only one of it’s kind in that particular issue.

6. Small ezines Vs. Big ezines: bigger is not always better. The big ezines with 1000’s of subscribers tend to have more ads than the small ezines. Also, small ezines with only a few hundred subscribers often have a much more targeted audience than the big ezines.

7. Repeat your ads. Research shows that off the Web, an ad has to be seen about 21 times before someone acts on it; on the Internet it’s about 9 times. If your budget allows, try and have your ad repeated at least three times in a particular ezine. Most ezines offer discount packages for bulk advertising.

8. Email address Vs. URL. The advantage of giving an email address is that it gives you the opportunity to send a powerful sales letter to the person who responded to your ad. It’s also much easier to track your ads with an email address than a URL.

9. Offer something free in your ad copy. It’ll often tip the balance between a response and no response.

10. Keep your ads short, even if you’re not using the number of words you’re allowed. Short ads are more likely to be read. Keep your sentences short too; they pack much more power. Use the word ‘You’. Don’t describe your product but tell the reader what your product can do for them.

he Shanghai Ballet fills the stage with talent, movement, and fun. The ballet “Coppélia” takes place in a Galician village, and it appeared the entire little town had turned out for tonight’s celebration. “Coppélia” is a rare ballet with a comic bent, a witty female lead, and, uh, less-than-heroic male characters. Like the Nutcracker, it is based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffman, and you’ll notice the parallels in the dreamy, childlike sense of make-believe it portrays.

Formed in 1979, the Shanghai Ballet has become a world-renowned dance company whose members have won many awards at prestigious international ballet competitions. They are currently on a U.S. tour, showcasing the grace and skill of their dancers.

Act I reveals that Franz and Swanilda are an uneasy couple. Franz is revealed to be a typical man, blowing a kiss to a pretty girl in an upstairs window right in front of Swanilda, his supposed fiancée. Still, you feel sorry for him when Swanilda begins teasing him cruelly in front of a growing crowd in the village square for his unfaithfulness. This act contains as much pantomime as dancing. Acting out a story is always a work of rather abstract art, and it was an amusing challenge to interpret the gestures and dance movements: “Ah, the burgermeister is asking Swanilda if she and Franz will marry tomorrow as planned. She’s being rather non-committal…” There is some very nice solo and ensemble dancing here, including some terrific one-footed twirling jumps by Swanilda. Remember, in hula you watch the hands; in ballet you watch the feet. And what of Las Vegas-style dancing, you ask? Never mind.

The pretty girl who started all this is none other than Coppélia, daughter of the eccentric old toymaker Coppélius. In a rather Shakespearean way, Swanilda and her girlfriends become as intensely interested in this silent girl in the upper window as Franz is - and nobody knows a thing about her! Act I ends with the kids figuring out how to sneak into Coppélius’ house to satisfy their overpowering curiosity.

Act II is really fun. Swanilda and her nervous young girlfriends sneak into the house and are startled by each of the old man’s life-sized dolls, one at a time. The dancers’ expressions of curiosity, alarm, and discovery are utterly charming. When they open the curtain to Coppélia’s room - have you guessed it already? - ah, so thats why she didn’t respond to the hellos and waves from outside. Swanilda is delighted (probably at Franz’s gullability at falling for a doll), and after old Coppélius returns and chases the other girls out, she hides in Coppélia’s room and puts on the doll’s dress, taking her place. Soon Franz climbs in through the workshop window seeking Coppélia. Old Coppélius confronts Franz and then offers him a drink spiked secretly with sleeping powder.

The toymaker then attempts a spell to transfer the life force from the sleeping Franz into his beloved Coppélia. Swanilda fools him by pretending to come to life. She dances mechanically and, to our great amusement, frequently “accidentally” bumps and slaps him as she moves. Okay, we men aren’t looking too smart in this story. The act ends hilariously after Franz awakes: Coppélius learns he has been tricked, is completely overwhelmed, and faints comically as the curtain closes. Swanilda also has great fun revealing the truth about the doll to poor Franz, who is forgiven in the end. (It’s a small village; maybe Swanilda figures he’s the best she can do.) Given that the Shanghai Ballet is on tour and can’t drag an orchestra along, the music is recorded - and perhaps a bit too soft - but the score is spunky and complements the action perfectly here.

The Shanghai Ballet has many principal dancers who can play different roles as needed in their performances. Tonight Swanilda was played by Fan Xiaofeng, and with her playful facial expressions, she seemed perfect for the role. Franz was portrayed by Ke Da, who normally plays another fiancé soloist as part of a group of couples to be married in the story. He exuded an earnest innocence that contrasted Swanilda’s coquettishness wonderfully.

The story largely ends there. Act III consists of some terrific celebratory dances by the corps de ballet and the pairs of fiancé soloists. In this act there were no props on stage - not even a backdrop, which seemed odd. Oh, well - it was the dancing that counted. Different groups performed dances named “Hours of the Day”, “Dawn”, “Hours of the Night”, and “Spinners”. When the male fiancé soloists lifted their partners, it appeared to require all their strength, whereas Nureyev and Baryshnikov could have played “catch” across the stage with one of those ballerinas. That’s probably just genetics, though. The best dance of all was the graceful, romantic wedding dance by Franz and Swanilda.

The back of the camera is almost all LCD screen, 2.5″ worth, it’s extra large, ideal for composing and viewing your shots. It has a 3x zoom with anti-shake and 30 scene modes compared to the usual 8 or 12 on most digicams, plus you can make up your own too. Being this small you would figure that there couldn’t possibly be any manual controls, but you’d be wrong. The EP-Z750 has aperture, shutter priority and full manual settings which are all quick and easy to navigate. You get the hang of it real quickly. The quality of the photos you take with the Casio Exilim are surprisingly excellent with dynamic colors. The Casio Exilim Ep-Z750 view finder is quite small, thank you for the big LCD screen. It’s got a quality 640×480 movie mode at 30 frames per second. Weight 4.5 oz.

2) Nikon Coolpix 7900 Digital Camera Review
The 7.1MP Coolpix 7900 is small, light and easy to use and like the Casio camera reviewed above, can be considered an ultra compact. It’s large, bright 2″ LCD display is perfectly visible outdoors in the sun. Unlike the Casio, it has a bulge where the battery goes forming a grip which makes it easy to hold. But that adds to its overall thickness. The Nikon Coolpix 7900 has a 3x optical zoom, a large battery capacity for taking hundreds of pictures, and a good flash. 640×480 movies at a full 30fps and Nikon’s new Face Priority autofocus will automatically detect a face in the portrait and focus on it. The Coolpix has D-Lighting that lightens the dark areas. Somehow they also found room to squeeze in vibration reduction. The Nikon 7900 uses scene modes and there’s one for almost every occasion, they’re easy to use and work very well. The 7900 doesn’t have manual control. The Nikon Coolpix 7900 is a small easy to use point and shoot camera with high-resolution. Weight 5.3oz

3) Canon PowerShot SD550 Digital Camera Review
The 7.1MP SD550 is an attractive, lightweight, thin, ultra-compact unit with an extra large 2.5″ LCD screen and optical viewfinder. It uses 13 shooting modes including auto and manual. The PowerShot has a 3x zoom, equivalent to 37-111mm. This camera is fast! Shooting 2 photos per second till you use up all your memory. The speed of the auto focus is also significantly improved over earlier ELPH’s. Canon has put the new DIGIC II Processor in and its images are excellent. The movie mode is 640×480 at a nice 30 frames per second. Of course it’s PictBridge compatible and has a good flash. This is a solid performer with point and shoot ease. The Canon SD500, the SC550’s sibling is the same camera for $50 less with a 2″ LCD screen. Weight 6.08oz.

4) Olympus C-7000 Zoom Digital Camera Review
The 7.1MP, C-7000 is a very good looking compact digital camera with solid performance. Zoom is in the name, because this beauty has a 5x optical zoom, and a 6x digital zoom with the 35mm camera equivalency of a 39mm-190mm lens. This makes getting candid people shots easier, you don’t need to get as close to your subject, just use your zoom to get in. The Olympus C-7000 Zoom has a large 2″ LCD that is excellent even outside. You’re not going to make a feature length movie with it however, because it takes 20 second clips at 30fps. The pop-up flash works good and easy to read menus make the C-7000 fairly easy to navigate. It has the new Olympus TruePic Turbo Image Processor for fast cycle times and excellent details. The C-7000 Zoom has 11 shooting modes plus manual operation. It’s PictBridge Compatible for easy printing without a computer. This little Oly is tough to beat with it’s powerful zoom, small size and high resolution. Weight 7.07oz

5) Sony CyberShot DSC-W7 Digital Camera Review
The 7.2 MP DSC-W7 is bigger than the ultra compact Casio Exilim its considered a compact digital camera. In traditional Sony style, this small camera is well thought out and easy to use everyday. Its got a viewfinder and a really big 2.5″ LCD display that’s nice for viewing and composing your shots. The 3x optical zoom lens is a Carl Zeiss equivalent to a 28-114mm lens. No expensive batteries to buy ever, it comes with 2 AA rechargeable batteries. The Sony CyberShot has an extremely quick start up time and fast recycle time. The DSC-W7 uses the memory stick format and has a an internal memory of 32MB. A manual mode with aperture and shutter speed controls with a photo exposure preview. Your also hooked up with an excellent movie mode with good sound just what you’d expect from Sony. The Sony CyberShot DSC-W7 is a very nice camera that takes good hi-resolution pictures and is easy to use. Weight 6.90 0z.
